The main theme of this year's International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction focuses on the 7th Goal (goal G) of the Sendai framework of action “Strengthening the sustainability and accessibility of multi-hazard early warning systems for the people by 2030."

Resolution No. 64/200 isued on December 21, 2009, the General Assembly United Nations decided to designate October 13th  every year to commemorate the International Day for Prevention and Mitigation of Disasters.

The 2022 edition takes place during the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework, which will conclude at a High-level Meeting of the General Assembly in May 2023 with a political declaration.

It is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress being made toward preventing and reducing disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods, economies, and basic infrastructure in line with the international agreement for reducing global disaster risk and losses, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, adopted in March 2015.

The main objective of Sendai action is to avoid creating new risks and to reduce existing risks. When that is not possible, people-centered early warning systems and preventive actions to take early action are the way to minimize loss of life and property as well as livelihoods.
